This exhibition was born from a simple yet increasingly rare desire:
To restore to storytelling a place that is neither that of information nor that of spectacle. At a time when stories circulate as flows — data, images, instant content immediately consumed and forgotten — Uma página aberta affirms another way of telling: slower, more porous, more hospitable.
Here, to tell does not mean to explain or to demonstrate. Rather, it means allowing a story to settle, creating a space where something can be transmitted without being entirely resolved. This approach finds a particular resonance in Walter Benjamin’s thought, when he distinguishes information — immediate and self-contained — from storytelling, which never fully gives itself away and continues to work on the listener. A story does not impose meaning: it opens a duration, it allows for return, drift, and imagination.

The place in which this exhibition unfolds is not neutral.
The place in which this exhibition unfolds is not neutral. A hotel is, by nature, a space of latent narratives. One stays there without inscribing oneself permanently; one inhabits it without belonging to it. One crosses paths with lives one will never know, inhabits rooms already passed through by others, and that will be inhabited again after one’s departure. And yet, each passage invents its own fiction. A numbered room becomes our room. A salon becomes our pause. A garden becomes our inner landscape — for the duration of a stay.
This temporary appropriation, this coexistence of the anonymous and the intimate, creates a form of discreet magic. The place becomes a palimpsest of lived, supposed, or imagined stories. The intention here was not to tell the history of the place, nor to illustrate it, but to extend its logic: to welcome open, fragmentary, transmissible narratives.
Bringing together works by Juraj Toman, Maria Beatitude, Marco Cordero, Carlos Tárdez and Khaled Dawwa, Uma página aberta assembles different practices connected by a shared attention to narrative as an open experience. The works on view offer neither a single message nor a moral. They leave blanks, suspensions, and zones of uncertainty. They invite the viewer to slow down, to project, to complete. Within this space, each person is free to extend what is given to them, to let the experience circulate rather than consume it.

EXHIBITION VIEWS

Perspective Galerie is a contemporary art gallery founded 20 years ago by Géraldine Banier in Paris, in the Saint-Germain-des-Prés district. Since its inception, it has supported artists from diverse cultural backgrounds, both established and emerging.
Today, the gallery focuses its activity on a vibrant and singular exhibition space: Palacete Severo, in Porto. Located at the heart of this hotel, Perspective Galerie unfolds a rare experience, where artworks inhabit both the public spaces and the guest rooms. The hanging is conceived as a daily presence: a way of discovering art differently, within the intimacy of a lived-in place, conducive to contemplation, surprise, and dialogue.
The gallery regularly collaborates with independent curators, offering a demanding programme open to the diversity of contemporary forms and territories.
